Loyola College - Baltimore, Post graduate study in instructing reading/reading difficulties

Qualifications

I am currently instructing the writing process, and writing skills at college level and graduate levels, in an Academic Resource Center at the University of Baltimore. I am a very well educated, mature and responsible educational professional, with experience in teaching 4th graders (special education), middle school students, and also incarcerated students studying toward their GED.
I am now employed at a University in their Writing Center, and also instruct at a licensed adult learning center, in Baltimore City, teaching Pre-Ged/GED, and I also work as a writing consultant (tutor) at the Academic Resource Center at the University of Baltimore. I have performed all of these jobs well, and am particularly gratified when I am working with students who are motivated to learn.

I am very flexible in my ability to address a variety of academic subjects and different learning styles and learning levels. I am easy to get along with, and have a good sense of humor.

It is fair to say that my students like me and most often highly value the assistance I have given them.

Comments

Very flexible as to the job assignment and the expectations of the tutee and tutee's family. Positive and gracious manner, even when under stress. Very patient, with compassion and understanding for the difficulties and challenges of others. Highly educated. Very intelligent, with a broad general knowledge base. A passionate advocate of "life long learning", and willing to "go the distance" with a struggling student.
Available most days of the week - part-time, after April 5th,, 2009. Am willing to instruct in the evenings. Not available, most days until 11:00 AM. Will meet at person's home or a local library setting, or school setting, but not at my home. (I have three dogs.)
I have been told that I am particularly "good" with students who are having difficulties.
During the summer months, I am available seven days a week, afternoons and evenings.

References

Available upon request. I like to check with people before I give them as a reference.

Personal Statement

I have mentioned some of my strengths in the "qualifications" section.
Briefly, I am a very intelligent and highly curious person, and I apply these strengths to my teaching. I believe that most people are more capable and intelligent than they realize, so that building confidence and self- esteem is a big ingredient in my approach(s) to working with a student. I do not get discouraged and work toward their not getting discouraged.
I am prompt, positive in my manner and approach,, and consistent. I am in good health ( with a few creaky joints).
Teaching is now very important to my life and my sense of who I am. Watching and helping people learn is VERY important to me and to my sense of well-being. I love tutoring, and am most interested in working with students who are at the high school and college levels.
